How you store your wig between wears has a bigger impact on its lifespan than almost anything else. Poor storage leads to tangling, matting, fibre damage, and a cap that loses its shape — all of which shorten the life of your wig significantly. The good news is that storing your wig correctly takes almost no effort once you have the right setup.
The Wig Stand: Your Most Important Accessory
A wig stand (also called a mannequin head or wig holder) is the single most important storage item you can own. It keeps the cap in its natural dome shape, allows air to circulate around the wig, and prevents the fibres from being compressed or flattened. Folding a wig into a drawer or leaving it crumpled on a surface is one of the fastest ways to create permanent matting and loss of style.
Choose a stand that is the right size for your wig's cap — a stand that is too large will stretch the cap, and one that is too small will not support the shape. Collapsible travel stands are also available if you need to store or transport your wig in a bag.
Where to Keep Your Wig Stand
Store your wig away from direct sunlight, which can fade synthetic fibres and damage human hair colour. Keep it away from humidity (so not in a bathroom) and away from heat sources like radiators or vents. A cool, dry room with good airflow is ideal — a dressing table or bedroom shelf works well for most people.
Long-Term Storage (When You Are Not Wearing It)
If you are storing a wig for an extended period — more than a few weeks — brush it out gently first to remove any tangles, apply a light conditioning spray, and store it either on a stand inside a dust bag or in the original box it came in. This protects the fibres from dust and keeps the style intact. Do not seal a wig in an airtight bag, as this can trap moisture and cause damage.
Travelling With a Wig
For travel, a wig box or a hard-sided wig case is the safest option. If you are packing light, wrap the wig carefully in a silk or satin scarf, turn it inside out, and place it in your bag away from hard or sharp items. Never pack a wig in checked luggage without protection — temperature and pressure changes can cause significant damage.
