Losing your hair to chemotherapy is one of the most visible and emotionally significant parts of breast cancer treatment. It is one thing to prepare yourself mentally — it is another thing entirely to be standing in front of a mirror watching it happen. We work with women going through this every week at Milk & Honey Wigs, and there are a few things we wish more people were told before they walked through our door.
Timing: Shop Before You Lose Your Hair
The single most useful thing you can do is visit a wig studio before chemotherapy-related hair loss begins — typically 2–4 weeks after your first infusion for most regimens. Shopping while you still have your hair means you can match your wig to your actual colour, parting, and face shape with accuracy. It is also simply less emotionally fraught than shopping after hair loss has already occurred, when the mirror can feel brutal.
Your Wig Does Not Have to Look Like Your Old Hair
Many women come to us wanting an exact replica of their pre-treatment hair. And for some, that is exactly what feels right. But we also work with women who use this moment to try something they have always been curious about — a different length, a different colour, a style they never felt brave enough to try. There is no right answer. What matters is that you feel like yourself, or the version of yourself you want to be right now.
Your Head Will Change During Treatment
Hair loss from chemotherapy is not always immediate or uniform. You may lose hair in stages, or lose some density but not all. Your scalp may become more sensitive as treatment progresses. This is why we recommend a well-fitted adjustable cap — not too tight, not too loose — and a soft inner lining. Avoid adhesive during active treatment unless recommended by your medical team.
You May Want More Than One Wig
A single wig worn daily through a 6-month chemotherapy course will show significant wear. Many of our clients choose two wigs in rotation — one everyday style and one backup — which extends the life of both significantly and means you are never without a wig if one needs washing.
You Are Allowed to Feel However You Feel About It
Some women feel empowered by their wig. Some feel like they are in disguise. Some days it is both at once. Every feeling is valid. Our team at Milk & Honey approaches every consultation with complete privacy, zero judgement, and a genuine desire to help you find something you love.
