Wigs Sydney: What to Expect at a Milk & Honey Appointment
If you are looking for wigs in Sydney, you will quickly notice that most of your options are online. You scroll through images, guess at sizing, and hope the colour matches the photo. The alternative — a proper, one-on-one consultation at a dedicated wig studio — is rarer, and some women do not realise it is available to them at all.
Milk & Honey Wigs operates a private, appointment-based showroom in the Sutherland Shire, in Sydney's south. This guide explains what an appointment looks like, who it is designed for, and how to make the most of it.
Why an Appointment Makes a Difference
Buying a wig is unlike buying most things. Fit, colour, texture, and cap construction all interact with your head shape, skin tone, and lifestyle in ways that are genuinely difficult to judge from a screen. A good wig that is the wrong colour for your complexion will never look right, even if it is technically perfect in every other way.
An appointment gives you the chance to try wigs on, see them in person under real light, and talk through what you actually need with someone who has fitted hundreds of women. It is slower than clicking "add to cart," but the difference in confidence at the end of the process is significant.
Our showroom is private and one-on-one. There are no other customers present. You are not trying on wigs in a public shop floor or under the eye of strangers. Many of our clients are women going through hair loss due to alopecia, chemotherapy, or other medical conditions — the private setting matters to them, and it matters to us.
Where We Are: Sutherland Shire, Sydney's South
Our showroom is in Sutherland, which is roughly 35 kilometres south of Sydney CBD. It is accessible from across the Sutherland Shire — Cronulla, Miranda, Caringbah, Engadine — as well as from St George, the Illawarra, and inner Sydney.
Parking is available nearby. If you are travelling from further afield — the North Shore, the Hills District, or interstate — an appointment is still worth the trip. Many of our clients drive two or three hours. They tell us it was worth it, because they left with a wig they were actually confident wearing, rather than something that sat in a box because the colour was off.
We are appointment-only. We do not operate as a walk-in shop. This is by design: it means we can give each client our full attention without the pressure of a busy retail environment. Book your appointment here.
What Happens at the Appointment
There is no standard script — every appointment is shaped by what you need. That said, most sessions follow a natural rhythm:
First, we listen. Before anything goes on your head, we want to understand your situation. Are you experiencing hair loss or is this a style choice? Is this your first wig, or are you replacing something you loved? Do you have a lifestyle constraint — sport, swimming, an office environment — that the wig needs to work around? What is your colour history, and how much maintenance are you prepared for?
Then we look at what suits you. Face shape, skin tone, and the quality of your natural hair (if present) all inform which cap construction and colour range will work best. We will pull a selection of human hair wigs based on what we have learned, and we try things on.
You try wigs on. This is the part that matters most. A wig can look completely different on a stand compared to on your head. You will likely try on more styles than you expected, because the process of seeing what you do not like clarifies what you do. Take your time. There is no rush.
We talk through care and wear. Before you leave with anything, we explain how to wear, adjust, and care for the wig. If the wig has a lace front, we show you how to secure it. If it needs any customisation — length, fringe, styling — we discuss what is possible.
What to Bring
There is not much you need to bring, but a few things help:
- Any reference images you have saved — styles you like, colours you are drawn to, or examples of what you want to avoid
- Photos of your natural hair, if you are trying to match something you have lost
- A friend or family member if you want a second opinion — appointments can include a support person
- Any previous wigs if you want help understanding why they did or did not work
Do not feel like you need to prepare extensively. Part of what we do is ask the questions you might not think to ask yourself.
Appointments for Hair Loss: What to Know
A significant part of our work is with women who are experiencing hair loss — whether from alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, chemotherapy, or other medical causes. If this is your situation, a few things are worth knowing before you book.
First: there is nothing to prepare or present. You come as you are. We have worked with women at every stage of hair loss, including complete loss. The appointment is a private space, and we do not have a script for what "normal" is supposed to look like.
Second: we do not treat hair loss medically, and we are not a medical service. We provide wigs. If you are in the middle of treatment and unsure about timing — whether to come in before hair loss starts or after — the answer is: whenever you feel ready. Some women come in ahead of time and want to be prepared; others wait until they have a clearer picture of what they are dealing with. Both approaches are valid.
Third: the medical wig range at Milk & Honey is built for everyday wear by women with sensitive or absent scalps — cap construction, comfort, and security are the primary design priorities. We can walk you through what makes a medical-grade wig different at the appointment.
How Long Does an Appointment Take?
Allow one to two hours. First-time appointments often run longer because there is more ground to cover. If you are returning to replace or add to a wig you already own, a second appointment is usually quicker.
We do not hurry appointments. If you need to come back to try something a second time before deciding, that is fine. There is no pressure to purchase on the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need to travel to Sydney to buy a Milk & Honey wig?
- No. We offer many wigs online at mhwigs.com.au with detailed photos, descriptions, and our standard return policy. However, for a first purchase — especially for hair loss — an in-person appointment removes the uncertainty of buying something so personal without trying it. Interstate clients regularly travel for appointments; most say they wish they had done it sooner.
- How do I book an appointment at the Sutherland Shire showroom?
- Visit mhwigs.com.au/pages/sutherland-sydney to see current availability and book online. We are appointment-only — we do not accept walk-ins. If you have specific questions before booking, you can reach us through the contact form on that page.
- Is the showroom accessible for people using mobility aids?
- Please contact us before your appointment to discuss access. We will do everything we can to accommodate your situation.
- Can I bring a support person to my appointment?
- Yes. You are welcome to bring a friend, partner, or family member. One support person is ideal — a large group can make the fitting process more complicated. If you are unsure, one other person is almost always a positive addition to the appointment.
- What if I am not ready to buy at the appointment?
- That is completely fine. Some people come in wanting information before they commit to anything. Others have the appointment and need time to think. There is no purchase obligation. We would rather you leave with the right information than with the wrong wig.
- Do you offer wigs in Sydney outside of the Sutherland Shire?
- Our showroom is in the Sutherland Shire, which is the only in-person location we operate. We do ship across all of Sydney and Australia. If you are in Sydney but cannot reach Sutherland, our online store ships with standard and express options, and our team is available by email and phone if you have questions before ordering.
