Wig Density Explained: 130%, 150%, 180% and How to Choose

One of the most common questions we get from first-time wig buyers is: "What density should I choose?" It's an easy thing to overlook when you're focused on style and colour — but wig density has a huge impact on how natural your wig looks and how comfortable it feels to wear.

Here's a plain-English breakdown of everything you need to know.

What Is Wig Density?

Wig density refers to how thick or full the hair is on the wig — specifically, the amount of hair relative to the cap. It's expressed as a percentage, where 100% is considered "natural" — a density that closely mimics the average person's natural hair fullness.

Most wigs available today range from around 130% to 250% density, each giving a noticeably different look and feel.

Wig Density Chart: What Each Level Looks Like

130% Density — Natural and Lightweight

130% is the most natural-looking density option. It closely mimics average natural hair volume — not too thick, not too thin. This is a great choice if you:

  • Want a realistic, "this is just my hair" look
  • Have fine or medium natural hair and want a consistent match
  • Prefer a lighter, more breathable wig for everyday wear
  • Are new to wigs and want something low-maintenance and easy to style

At 130%, the wig will move naturally and isn't as heavy on the head. It's the most common density for human hair wigs designed for daily wear.

150% Density — The Sweet Spot

150% is the most popular density across most wig collections — including ours at Milk & Honey Wigs. It gives a fuller look than natural hair without tipping into "overdone" territory. This is the density most people picture when they imagine a beautiful, full wig.

150% density is ideal if you:

  • Want a noticeable fullness without it looking theatrical
  • Like blowout or voluminous styles
  • Are replacing hair lost to alopecia or chemotherapy and want a full, healthy appearance
  • Wear your hair down most of the time and want it to look lush

180% Density — Full and Glamorous

180% density gives a visibly thick, full, and glamorous finish. This is the density you often see in editorial shoots and on influencers going for a maximalist aesthetic. At this level, the wig has significant volume and the hair is noticeably dense from root to tip.

180% is a good fit if you:

  • Love big, full styles with serious volume
  • Regularly wear your wig in curly or wavy styles (which compress, so higher density helps maintain the look)
  • Want a dramatic finish for special occasions or performances
  • Have naturally very thick hair and want the wig to match

Keep in mind that 180% wigs are heavier. For all-day everyday wear, many people find 150% more comfortable long-term.

200%+ Density — Maximum Volume

Densities of 200% and above are very full and are typically used for bold looks, curly styles, or wigs worn for short periods (performances, events). The weight and heat retention increases at this level, so comfort over a full day can be a factor.

How Does Hair Type Affect Density Choice?

Curly and wavy hair compresses, so a curly wig at 150% will look less full than a straight wig at 150%. If you're buying a curly or coily wig, consider going up one density level from what you'd normally choose for a straight style. For example, if 150% is your go-to in straight wigs, try 180% in curly.

Human Hair vs Synthetic: Does Density Work the Same?

Yes — density percentages work the same way across both human hair wigs and synthetic options. The difference is that human hair can be styled to add or reduce volume (blow-drying, flat ironing, etc.), whereas synthetic wigs tend to hold their set shape. This means the density you choose in a synthetic wig is closer to the "fixed" result you'll get.

What's the Most Popular Density at Milk & Honey Wigs?

The overwhelming favourite is 150% — it hits that sweet spot of looking full and beautiful without feeling heavy or overdone. Most of our lace front wigs and 13x6 lace fronts are available at 150%, with some styles also offered at 130% and 180% for customers who want a specific look.
