It is a question we hear regularly at Milk & Honey Wigs: can I swim in my wig? The short answer is: technically yes, but it is not something we recommend for everyday swimming if you want your wig to last. Here is the full breakdown.
What Happens When a Wig Gets Wet?
Both synthetic and human hair wigs can get wet. The difference is what happens when they do. Synthetic wigs are designed to return to their set style when they dry — which sounds convenient, but chlorine and saltwater can permanently damage synthetic fibres, stripping the coating that gives them their texture and sheen. Human hair wigs can handle water better than synthetics, but chlorine and salt are still damaging to the hair cuticle over repeated exposure.
What About the Cap?
The bigger concern for swimming is often the cap and the lace, not the hair itself. Swimming with a lace front or full lace wig means the lace is repeatedly saturated and dried — which weakens the lace over time and can cause it to fray or tear. If you are wearing your wig with adhesive, submersion will compromise the bond, and removing a saturated, glued wig is a much more difficult process.
Can I Wade or Paddle in a Wig?
Light water exposure — paddling at the beach, getting caught in light rain, a splash at a pool party — is generally fine and will not cause immediate damage. The concern is prolonged or repeated immersion, particularly in chlorinated or saltwater. If you know your wig will get wet, a glueless style will be much easier to manage and dry correctly on a wig stand afterwards.
What Are the Alternatives?
If you swim regularly and want a hair solution that works in the water, there are a few options. Swim caps are the simplest protective measure — they keep the wig completely dry in most conditions. Alternatively, some women choose a separate, lower-cost synthetic wig dedicated to water use. Another popular option is a swim-specific hairpiece or hair wrap designed for wet conditions.
How to Care for Your Wig If It Does Get Wet
Blot — do not rub — to remove excess water. Rinse thoroughly with clean, cool water to remove any chlorine or salt. Apply a small amount of wig conditioner from our BORN AGAIN range, then place the wig on a stand and allow it to air dry completely before wearing again. Never use a blow dryer on a wet synthetic wig. Browse our full synthetic wig range or book a consultation for personalised advice.
