The Wig Consultation: What Happens at a Milk and Honey Appointment
For many women, booking a wig appointment is an act of quiet courage. Whether you are navigating hair loss, preparing for chemotherapy, or simply curious about what it would feel like to try on a different version of yourself, walking through the door of a wig showroom for the first time can feel like a significant step. We want you to know what to expect before you arrive — so the first thing you feel when you walk in is relief, not uncertainty.
Our consultations take place in a private showroom in the Sutherland Shire, Sydney. They are appointment-only, which means there are no other customers browsing past, no background noise, and no reason to hurry. The space is yours for the duration.
Who the Consultation Is For
The short answer: anyone who would like one. Our appointments are designed to accommodate very different situations, and we adapt to each one.
Some women come to us because they are losing their hair — through chemotherapy, alopecia, hormonal change, or another medical condition — and they need a wig that fits comfortably on a sensitive or bare scalp. Others come because they have always worn wigs and want something finer, better-made, or more specifically matched to their colouring. And some come simply out of curiosity, wondering if a wig might give them something they have been missing — colour, length, texture, a change.
All of these are valid reasons to book. You do not need a medical diagnosis to come in. You do not need to know anything about wigs. You do not need to have a clear idea of what you want. Our role in the consultation is to help you figure that out.
What Happens When You Arrive
You will be welcomed into the private consultation room. There is no retail floor to walk through, no public counter, and no queue. The first few minutes are simply a conversation — we want to understand why you are here and what you are hoping to find.
If your hair loss is medically related, we will ask a few gentle questions about your situation: how much coverage you currently have, whether your scalp is sensitive, and what has felt comfortable or uncomfortable in the past. If you are here for a fashion reason, we will ask about your lifestyle, the looks you are drawn to, and any previous wig experiences (good or not so good) you want to build on or avoid.
Nothing about this conversation is clinical. We are simply gathering the context we need to guide you toward the right style — rather than pulling wigs at random and hoping something works.
Trying Wigs On
The central part of the consultation is trying wigs. We work through a curated selection based on what you have told us, bringing out pieces in the colours, lengths, and constructions most likely to suit you. You try them on, we adjust the fit, and you tell us what feels right.
There is no pressure to like the first thing you try, and no expectation that you will find your answer immediately. Some women know within the first two minutes. Others need to work through several options. Both are completely normal, and we have time for both.
What you are feeling for during this stage is not just appearance — it is fit, comfort, and confidence. A wig can look beautiful on a stand and feel wrong on your head. It can also look simple in photos and feel completely natural on. We find that most women know within seconds when they have found the right one. There is a visible shift — a slight intake of breath, a smile that comes before they have consciously decided anything.
Our human hair wigs are what we are most known for: premium quality, individually constructed, designed to feel like your own hair. We also carry lace front styles that deliver an exceptionally natural hairline. We will show you whatever makes sense for your situation.
Cap Fitting and Adjustments
A wig that is the right style but the wrong fit will never feel right. Part of the consultation is ensuring the cap sits correctly. Most of our wigs include adjustable straps at the nape, and we can show you how to use internal combs or a wig grip for added security if your own hair is sparse or absent.
For women with hair loss or scalp sensitivity, we pay particular attention to how the cap edge lands. A cap that cuts into a sensitive scalp, or that sits too loosely on a bare head, will be uncomfortable regardless of how it looks. We will not suggest a wig that does not sit comfortably — appearance and wearability are both non-negotiable here.
The Conversation Around Colour
Colour is one of the most personal decisions in a wig consultation, and it is often the one people are least prepared for. Women frequently come in wanting to match their previous colour exactly — and then discover in the mirror that a slightly lighter or slightly different tone suits them better than their old shade ever did. This is not unusual. Hair loss sometimes prompts an opportunity to reflect honestly on what a colour is doing for your face, rather than what it has always done out of habit.
We guide colour choices by holding swatches close to the face in different lighting, and by listening to what you say you want versus what you notice in the mirror. We will never push you toward a colour you do not love. But we will gently point it out if a colour you arrived certain about is doing something unexpected when it is actually on you.
What to Bring
You do not need to prepare extensively. A few things that can help:
- Photos of styles you like — these give us a sense of what you respond to visually, even if the wig itself is completely different.
- Your usual headwear — if you are currently wearing hats or scarves, bring one so we can see how a wig might integrate.
- A friend or family member — some women find it helpful to have a trusted person with them, particularly if this is their first wig. Some prefer to come alone. Both are equally welcome.
After the Consultation
If you find a wig you love, we will discuss how to care for it, secure it, and style it at home. We cover washing, storage, and which products work (and which to avoid). Many of our clients return for a second appointment once they have been wearing their wig for a few weeks — not because anything has gone wrong, but because they want to refine their technique or explore a second style.
If you are not ready to decide on the day, that is absolutely fine. There is no sales pressure and no follow-up that pushes for a decision. We are here when you are ready.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a wig consultation at Milk and Honey take?
Most consultations run between 60 and 90 minutes. We do not cut the appointment short if you need more time — the room is yours until we have answered your questions and you feel clear on your options.
Do I need to know anything about wigs before I come in?
Not at all. Many of our clients come in knowing very little about wig construction or styling. That is exactly what the consultation is for — we start from wherever you are and work forward from there.
Is the consultation free?
Yes. There is no charge for the appointment and no obligation to purchase. We ask for a booking in advance so we can prepare and give the time properly.
What if I am completely bald due to chemotherapy or alopecia?
We work with women in all stages of hair loss, including total hair loss. We have specific experience fitting wigs on bare scalps and will make sure whatever you leave with sits securely and comfortably. Please do mention your situation when you book so we can prepare appropriately.
Can I bring someone with me to the appointment?
Yes, and many women do. The private consultation room accommodates you and one or two guests comfortably. If you prefer to come alone, that is equally welcome — some women find the appointment feels more personal that way.
