How to Secure a Wig Without Glue or Tape

Many wig wearers worry that their wig will slip or lift throughout the day — particularly during exercise, windy days or extended wear. While wig glue and tape are popular options, they aren't for everyone. The good news is there are several highly effective ways to keep your wig firmly in place without any adhesive at all.

Method 1: Adjustable Internal Straps

Almost all modern wigs include adjustable Velcro or hook-and-eye straps at the nape of the neck and sometimes at the temples. These are your first line of defence. Many people don't realise their wig feels insecure simply because the straps haven't been properly tightened. Take the time to adjust the straps on a freshly placed wig — a snug but comfortable fit should hold through most activities.

Method 2: Wig Grip Bands

A wig grip band is a velvet or silicone headband worn underneath your wig. It creates friction between the band and the wig cap, preventing slipping without any adhesive. Wig grips are particularly effective for smooth or bald scalps where there's no hair to grip onto. They're also comfortable, breathable and completely reversible. This is the most popular adhesive-free security method among our clients.

Method 3: Wig Clips and Combs

If you have some natural hair, small snap clips or combs can be sewn inside the wig cap and clipped to your own hair for a very secure hold. This is common practice in the competitive and performance wig world and provides excellent all-day security. The clips can be added by a wig fitter or sewn in at home.

Method 4: Bobby Pins

For occasional use or as a backup, bobby pins inserted at strategic points — through the wig into your natural hair or through the wig band — can provide additional hold. Use pins that match your wig colour, and place them at the temples and nape for maximum effect.

Method 5: Wig Cap Under the Wig

Wearing a nylon or mesh wig cap beneath your wig (over your natural hair) creates a smooth, grippy surface that helps the wig sit flat and stay in position. If you have long hair, braiding or pinning it flat under the wig cap before applying the wig also greatly improves fit and security.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a wig really stay on all day without glue?

Yes — most of our clients wear their wigs all day without any adhesive. A combination of well-adjusted internal straps and a wig grip band provides excellent security for everyday activities including work, exercise and social occasions. Glue is generally only needed for extreme activities or specific styling choices like sleek updos.

What is the best method for keeping a wig on during exercise?

For exercise, a wig grip band combined with tightened internal straps is the most effective adhesive-free method. For high-impact exercise, consider a shorter, more secure style such as a bob, and secure the wig with bobby pins at the temples and nape as an extra precaution. Many clients also choose synthetic wigs for exercise as they are lighter and more forgiving of sweat.

Will a wig slip off if I turn my head quickly or move around a lot?

A properly fitted wig with tightened straps and a wig grip band will stay firmly in place during normal movement including turning your head, nodding and walking. For sudden, vigorous movements, additional security from clips or a grip band is recommended.

Is wig glue bad for your scalp?

Most wig adhesives and tapes are formulated to be skin-safe when used as directed. However, some people experience sensitivity or irritation, particularly on already-sensitive scalps. For anyone with alopecia, skin conditions or undergoing medical treatment, we recommend starting with adhesive-free methods and consulting a dermatologist before using any adhesive near the scalp.

What do I do if my wig keeps slipping backwards?

A wig that slips backwards is usually too large or not sitting far enough forward on the head. Try placing the wig slightly lower on your forehead than feels natural at first — it should sit approximately 1–2cm above your natural hairline. Then tighten the front adjustable strap. A wig grip band worn at the front of the forehead will also prevent backward slippage effectively.
