Curly Wigs Australia: How to Choose, Style and Care for Yours

Curly wigs are having a moment — and for good reason. A great curly wig gives you all the drama, volume, and texture of natural curls without the time investment of maintaining them every day. But buying a curly wig is a little different from buying a straight one, and there are a few things worth knowing before you commit.

At Milk & Honey Wigs in Sydney, we stock a range of curly wig styles in both human hair and synthetic. Here's everything you need to know to choose the right one.

Types of Curl Patterns

Curl patterns in wigs are usually described using a number and letter system — the same system used for natural hair typing. Here's a quick guide:

  • 2A–2C (Wavy) — loose, beachy waves. These sit somewhere between straight and curly and are one of the most versatile patterns for everyday wear.
  • 3A–3C (Curly) — defined ringlets ranging from loose spirals (3A) to tighter, bouncier curls (3C). The most popular range for curly wigs.
  • 4A–4C (Coily) — tight coils and zig-zag patterns. Stunning when worn as intended, but these require more maintenance to keep defined.

Human Hair Curly Wigs vs Synthetic Curly Wigs

The choice between human hair and synthetic matters more with curly wigs than it does with straight styles. Here's why:

Human Hair Curly Wigs

Human hair curly wigs can be restyled with heat, which means you can refresh the curl pattern when it starts to drop or wear out. You can also diffuse them after washing to bring the curls back to life — just as you would with your own curly hair. With proper care, a quality human hair wig with a curly pattern can last 12–18 months of regular wear.

The trade-off is that natural curls require more maintenance — regular moisturising, gentle detangling, and careful washing to preserve the curl structure. Frizz is also more likely in humid conditions, just as with natural curly hair.

Synthetic Curly Wigs

Synthetic curly wigs hold their curl pattern regardless of humidity or moisture. The curls are baked in from manufacturing, so they spring back to shape even after washing. This makes them incredibly low-maintenance — great if you want to pull on your wig and go without any styling routine.

The limitation is that most synthetic wigs can't be heat-styled, so if the curl pattern drops or loses its definition over time, there's limited ability to restore it. They also tend to have a shorter lifespan than human hair.

Density: Go Higher for Curly Wigs

This is one of the most important things to know when buying a curly wig: curl patterns compress. What looks like very full, dense hair in a product photo can appear significantly less voluminous once the curls relax or clump together after wear.

For this reason, we generally recommend going up one density level for curly wigs compared to what you'd choose in a straight style. If you'd normally go with 150% in a straight wig, try 180% in a curly one to achieve a similar overall volume.

How to Care for a Curly Wig

Curly wigs need a little more love than straight styles. The key principles:

  • Moisturise regularly. Curls dry out faster than straight hair. Use a light leave-in conditioner or curl refresher spray to keep the fibres hydrated and the pattern defined.
  • Detangle gently. Always finger-detangle or use a wide-tooth comb starting from the ends and working upward. Never brush a curly wig — it creates frizz and destroys the curl pattern.
  • Wash in sections. Wash curly wigs in sections using downward strokes to avoid disrupting the curl structure. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air-dry on a wig stand.
  • Avoid sleeping in your wig. If you do need to sleep in it, loosely braid or pineapple the hair to minimise friction and tangling.
  • Store correctly. Store on a wig stand or in a silk bag to maintain the curl shape between wears.

Lace Front Curly Wigs

For the most natural-looking curly wig, a lace front cap construction gives you a seamless hairline that works beautifully with curly styles. Our lace front wig collection includes styles suited to curly and wavy looks — perfect for anyone who wants to wear their curly wig pulled back or styled away from the face.
